What is GEMS/Girls Who Code?

GEMS is a club for girls in grades 4-6 designed to introduce girls to careers in engineering, math, and science through fun and engaging activities. The girls will have the opportunity to explore higher math and science with no fear of failure because there is no test at the end. They will have the chance to get messy, work with tools, experiment and explore, and do the science that there is not always time for in the school day. Our GEMS Club also participates in Girls Who Code, which is a program designed to allow girls to explore coding in a fun and friendly environment.

The Banoak GEMS Club meets twice a month on Mondays from 3:15-4:30 PM. 

What is MathCounts?MathCounts is a competition program for students in grades 4-6 designed to stimulate students’ interest and achievement in mathematics. Teachers and volunteers coach student “mathletes” beginning each fall and continuing throughout the school year.  Students compete in four rounds of challenges, both as teams and individually.

What is Robotics?

Robotics team members design, build, code, and drive robots in competition against other teams in Catawba County. The Banoak Robotics team works with Lego Spike Prime robots. In addition to design and coding skills, team members also work on developing the 4 Cs: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. 

The Robotics Team meets on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:30 PM. 

What is Student Council?

Student Council is a wonderful leadership opportunity for students in grade 3-6. Each homeroom elects a Student Council representative in the fall, and these students meet regularly throughout the year during the school day to give feedback to administration on school business and plan service projects.
